Pinterest to promote ads from businesses

After 4 years Pinterest is moving towards monetizing its business.

Pinterest promoted pins

The social network announced on Thursday that it will “start experimenting with promoting certain pins from a select group of businesses.”

The initial test of ads will be in search results and categories feeds. For example, CEO Ben Silbermann said “a pin for a Darth Vader outfit from a costume shop might be promoted in a search for ‘halloween.’” But he has said the promoted pins will be tasteful – no flashy banners or popups, transparent – you will know if someone has paid for you to see an ad, relevant – they should be about stuff you’re interested in and finally, which I personally think is great, they will be improved based on your feedback.

Pinterest is like a few other startups who are hoping to gain traction first and figure out monetization later. The fact it appears they want members feedback on their tests of promoted pins shows they care about their users and hopefully it wont be too intrusive to an already great user experience.

The social network can drive a huge amount of traffic to your site but what the start or promoted pins means for business we will have to wait and see.
